"How Did They Do It?" With VP of Marketing Communications at The Honest Company, Jennifer Kroog Rosenberg!
When people ask me to give them one piece of career advice- I always tell them to 'say yes to every opportunity' because you never know where it can lead you. Well, it's true because Jennifer did just that not knowing where it would take her but hopeful it would lead her somewhere and it did! She's the VP of Marketing Communications at The Honest Company (you know Actress and Entrepreneur, Jessica Alba's company??) and has been paving the way for many of the clean beauty brands you see today. She shares some of the challenges she faced early on in her career such as not advocating enough for herself as well as what put her on the path to success, valuable career advice and more...
LA: What is one interesting thing that people may not know about your career?
J: Right out of college, I worked at Jive Records for six years at the peak of pop music with so many iconic artists. I gained a 360 understanding of the business, learned a lot of resilience and truly laid the foundation for my entire career: persistence, passion and working smart.
LA: During your professional journey, what is one mistake you made that you learned the most from?
J: Early on in my career, advocating for myself was a challenge, particularly because I have always been comfortable working behind the scenes. It took me time to understand that it's about more than compensation, it’s also about understanding your value and not waiting for others to acknowledge your efforts. You are always your own best advocate.
LA: What are you most proud of at this moment?
J: Professional pride is important, but my number one is that my kids are healthy, happy and growing into the most incredible people. When it comes to work, I am proud that I have been a part of businesses that have been cultural leaders and defined an era. Real talk: I am a huge college basketball fan, so I’m also really proud that I got to take my dad to Coach K’s last Duke game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
LA: What is one thing you did that put you on the right path to success in your career?
J: I learned to say yes to any opportunity that could potentially create a relationship or be a learning experience! You never know how, when or what it will activate, but the investment is worth it. Otherwise, I would say it’s a combination of hustle, loyalty and being the calm in the storm.
LA: One thing you wish people would stop doing in business?
J: Being competitive or using competitiveness as an excuse to bring people down. There is more than enough room for everyone to succeed on their own terms. The more you lift people up, the stronger it makes you as a leader, employee and a person!
