'How Did They Do It?' With Wedding and Event Planner, Mindy Weiss!

If you know anything about celebrity culture I'm sure you've read about or heard the name, Mindy Weiss when reading about various weddings and events in Hollywood. What started out as planning a 75th birthday party led her to be Hollywood's go-to wedding and event planner with clientele that includes the Kardashians, Ellen DeGeneres, and Justin and Hailey Bieber to name a few. Let's just say Mindy is a living legend when it comes to her craft we're proud to spotlight her journey, especially during International Women's Month!

LA: What is one interesting thing that people may not know about your career?

M: Most people don’t know I never intended to be a party planner. I owned a custom stationery business decades ago and one of my clients asked me to plan their party. At first I said no; I didn’t think I wanted to be a party planner. But luckily, this client was very persistent and I eventually said yes. That first event was a 75th birthday party, which led to my next ten referrals and events. I guess you could say it was fate.

LA: During your professional journey, what is one mistake you made that you learned the most from?

M: A big mistake I’ve made and since learned from is not getting paid before the job. I am now diligent about getting paid before doing the event. Never chase money after the work has been done and the party is over.

LA: What are you most proud of at this moment?

M: One thing I’m proud of is keeping almost all of my staff during Covid. Weddings and events went to zero overnight but it was extremely important to me that my team survive. I needed everyone who works with me to be okay when the world was not okay. It was not easy to do but I’m happy I was able to make it work. These people are family to me and we all needed to get through the shutdown.

LA: One thing you wish people would stop doing in business?

M: I wish people would stop taking out their frustrations on social media. It makes their future clients very uncomfortable. It’s fine to have a sense of humor but when you’re crying or complaining about clients, keep it offline. Other clients are going to see it. Keep the rants and meltdowns to yourself or your friends.

LA: Your go-to beverage after a long week (specifics please!)

M: Always a café latte. Always.
